PJE 07/29/2013 (First Entry)

You know what if feels like to be God?

It feels like being in love with someone who will never love you back the way you love them.

Will not.

Cannot.

But you love them with your everything...anyway.

Yeah...

Satan didn't know what he wanted when he was talking about taking the crown.

Being God ain't fun...or easy, sometimes.

Post Philippine Absence Explained!

Hi gang!

I just got back from the Philippines where I had a WHALE of a good time, learned a lot of new things about myself and my traveling buddy and did some research into attending school there for my Masters.

That's why I've been mysteriously absent for a week.

But...

I've been writing like crazy! No, not here...in my personal journal. Some of this stuff was too good not to share so I am going to post it on here for you guys. I hope you enjoy and I will try to link the pictures of the trip to FaceBook or vice-versa when I learn how so that you can see for yourself what is going on.

When you see a title that says PJE that means Personal Journal Entry and you'll know it came from my trip or from a time when I didn't have internet access for some misbegotten reason.

Ciao for now!

Catharsis

My friend Laura (who I am convinced Jesus wanted in my life and I am thankful for Him realizing my need for good, true friendships) preached a sermon about a month ago that resonated well within me. It was a sermon about worth.

Let me explain.

She shared that there are all sorts of things that are valuable and precious to different people. I mean...pearls before swine and all that...this is common knowledge. We don't wipe our butts with silver nor do we run to stash away toenail clippings in a bank vault.

Laura pointed out that the value of an object is ascribed by the buyer. At first I was confused because I thought..."No, the seller determines the value". But this is actually not true.

You see...when your BMW costs $50, 000...this is because someone is GOING to buy it. Someone (or someones rather) have deemed the car valuable enough to pay that amount of money. If people did not think so, the car would never sell and the company would either quickly drop its price or close down (if another market was not readily available and accessible).

Laura said that Jesus dug down in the dirt and picked up this rough, unpolished, seemingly unremarkable gem. He reached down and picked it up, brushed it off like a skilled metalsmith would and said "Yep, this one...this gem...this precious material is worth it. Worth my blood...worth dying for".That gem is you. Jesus bought us not out of obligation, but out of His own perception of how important we are. As a mother would die for her children because she deems their life more valuable and important than hers, so too did Jesus see us.

Those words mean sooo much to me.

I love being told or shown that I am loved. Having struggled for many years with low self esteem and self worth, to be actively told that Jesus found and still finds you valuable, makes you walk with a little more pep in your step and conduct yourself like the child of the KING that you are.

I took Laura's message a step further though.

And I did this because there are so many people who suffer from low self esteem...from low self-love, who choose to address their problem through casual sex, or even sex with someone they love (whether or not the person loves them back) and/or some other behavior in which they settle...settle for abuse...settle for whatever attention they can get from the person they so desperately want, settle for being used (money, time, body, etc) just so they can feel good about mattering to SOMEONE even if for a short time and/or a specific purpose.

I want to say this:

"Realizing that the Saviour and Creator deemed you and I worth of CREATION and REDEMPTION should mean something POWERFUL to us. Jesus created us and then lost us to sin and afterwards looked at us in our rotten, wretched, corrupt state and said "Yep, still worth it. Worth the very life I have". Having said that...

We must see our own worth.

We must realize what was sacrificed for us.

We must hold ourselves in higher esteem.

We must respect ourselves as much as God respects us.

The LORD OF ALL THINGS thought I was important, precious, beautiful, worthwhile, impressive, exciting, fun, pleasurable, endearing, amazing, VALUABLE, desirable, a catch...just plain ol' GOOD. SO GOOD in fact that I was worth His life. Therefore, I...you...we have no business decreasing our value for the attention or acceptance of any mortal man or woman.

NONE!

We DISHONOR God when we let ourselves be used by people like some piece of trash to be discarded about after use, to answer the beck and call of people we know do not love us, and to allow ourselves to be used to satisfy a persons temporal fantasies and vices when we have ubiquitously more to offer. We cheapen His sacrifice and say that we do not agree on the value He has given to us. We say that we are NOT the best thing that ever happened to Him. We should not sell ourselves short and WHATEVER we have to do to keep that in check, we should do it.
No one struggles to sell diamonds, rubies, sapphires, amethysts or pearls. Why on Earth are we lowering our standards and our VALUE for people who have not earned it, proven they deserve it or are remotely willing to die for us? Chances are, if they're willing to die for you...they won't want you lowering anything.

It is us who must do better. We must somehow align ourselves with how God thinks. We must understand how He sees us and then hold ourselves to that standard at all times. Sure we'll get lonely sometimes and we'll want to be loved by people...that is normal. But we'll also accept nothing less than the best when we hold ourselves in high esteem...in the same esteem Christ holds us. I mean...think about that. It's the most romantic thing in EVERY movie to have some stalwart star or parent fall on behalf of the one they love.

JESUS ACTUALLY DID THAT FOR US. IN REAL LIFE.

We owe it to Him...We owe it to ourselves to do better...to accept more. You are Princes and Princesses. Sons and Daughters of a bonafide KING. It's time you felt like it and acted like it.

Do NOT accept abuse...in ANY form.

Do NOT drop your drawers for any person that hasn't married you (not just willing to marry. They should RESPECT you enough to make good on the promise to get hitched).

Do NOT lower your standards of what a Christ-like significant other is.

Recognize your own worth and act acordingly. You deserve the very BEST and Jesus decided that was true when He gave us His very best...His life.

Return the favor."

Be Blessed.

Drama Comes A-Callin'

Yesterday, something was said about me by someone I now consider a good friend.

Something enlightening.

He said "Drama follows you around, but there's a reason for that".

I waited, with one eyebrow cocked, eager to hear how in God's name he'd clean that statement up.

He continued, "You're the kind of person that doesn't let real or perceived expectations inhibit the expression of your feelings. You don't feel like you have to restrict how you feel about things or expressing it. And some people can't deal with that. Therefore, you have drama".

I pondered his statement and...

1.) It's true.

and

2.) It makes me happy.

I have been through a lot (both internally and externally inflicted) and at this place in my life, I feel like I have the right to feel what I want and share that to whomever I please. If drama is a by-product, then so be it. I'm comfortable with this part of my self development and I wouldn't change it for the world.

Thanks Josh...for showing me how much I've grown.

A Mysterious Transformation

Umm...

this weekend...

two strange things happened.

1. My kids were talking about phimosis.

O_o

2. I understood why my kids call each other metamorphosis which in turn led to something a whole lot darker.

Let me explain.

I have a student who is entering puberty a little earlier than a lot of his peers and he has had extensive time outside of Korea so his English is pretty good. He gets a lot of curse words and innuendo easily in movies, conversations and the like, and as a 12 year old 6th grader, he is very eager to share the comedic filth with his peers.
Every Monday when I walk into class, some student is assailing me with the cry of "Teacher! Bartholemew is metamorphosis!" At first, I was very confused. As time went on, I shared with them the meaning of the word...that it means to change. They cried "yes!" and I was like "change into what? a butterfly?" I thought for sure that they meant that the change was because of puberty and thus he was changing into a teenager (and being a perv).

What I found out was much more disturbing.

It seems that the word for pervert, 변태 (byuntae) is the same word for metamorphosis.
This in and of itself would not be as disturbing if not for the fact that the Korean-English dictionary gives three definitions for byuntae (pronounced pee-yoon-teh).
a. metamorphosis
b. change
c. perverse

It hit me like a ton of bricks! I have been having the hardest time understanding why people with experience, knowledge, genius ideas and fully capable of improving things come to Korea and meet such quiet yet fierce opposition. For the people there, the ideology is that change is synonymous with perversion. THAT is what the kids were saying. They associate perversion with change because of the fact that it's the same word and therefore, to them, means the same thing! If you hold that cultural ideal, then when different people come trying to change things in your culture, you will see it as perverse (and summarily resist it as much as possible while still trying to save face and appear hospitable and respectful).

There is a similar thing I heard of with the Japanese words where the word for different is synonymous with the word bad. It makes it difficult to be the new person coming in where people say they want to learn from me and have cultural exchange, but your philosophies are that change and difference is a negative thing.
So I have solved the mystery of metamorphosis but it has also brought light to a darker truth.
Considering the continued efforts of annexation and cultural eradication of Korea by both Japan and China, I can see why they fight and hold fast to their traditions and are resistant to change...but you cannot open your door to embrace the rest of the planet, ready to share and think that you will only take what you want and change a little.

That's not real life.

I have come to realize that Koreans have a great responsibility to change their ways and thoughts about embracing difference and change. But I also understand that we, the rest of the world, must be patient with them while they do this. We, because of our cosmopolitan histories, have had no choice but to embrace change. Their history has made their experiences, outcomes and outlooks different. So even though, I don't like it...I have to be very patient and do my best to illustrate through patience and life example that change is a good thing.

I guess that's why it always puzzles people that I am here...that is QUITE the life change and definitely not something that would compute for them.

Hmph.

Closing Ceremonies of Pathfiners

So yesterday was the end of the weekend program at school. It was off to a rocky start with  the SDA Foreign Teachers having to come to some hardline negotiations with the SDA Korean staff about just how much weekend responsibility needed to take place.

All in all, I am pleased with the work we did. I definitely see room for improvement and will be implementing some next term but doing the extra for these kids is amazingly rewarding and I can honestly say, no one half-assed their work.

We were blessed with a special treat. The honors the Pathfinders had been working on for the semester were all music-instrument-related so they basically had a big concert afterwards. I was in HOG HEAVEN being surprised by how well they did in elementary school.

This school/church has never had a music day either so I am going to aggressively work on that for next term. All the teachers have one or more musical gifts...it's time we used them.

I haven't been this proud to be SDA or a Pathfinder in a long time.

I love my kids. ^_^

An Unexpected Yet Pleasant Occurence

Today we discussed movies and the messages they want you to get (and the ones they don't).

Pretty deep stuff.

I told my kids that my top 5 movies had to be:-

1. What Dreams May Come

2. The Sound of Music

3. Aliens

4. Man of Steel

5. Vampire Hunter D: BloodLust (if not Wall-E. This class is 6th grade so I threw Wall-E up there).

Then one of my kids, the Pastor's son, said that his favorite movie was Men of Honor. I wanted to grab him up and hug him for being mature enough (and versed in English enough) to enjoy that movie. Man...I cannot aptly explain to you the overwhelming pride and love that swelled in me when he said that....

I guess that fathers that are proud of their sons feel this way.

What an interesting feeling.

I like it.
