Once upon a time, not that long ago, there was a great thrill in visiting the airport. I remember when we'd get to Piarco early and watch as Aunty Janet, Aunty Michelle, Aunty Dianne or Aunty Silla's flights came in with excitement...knowing that the aircraft had borne someone special to us. It was an exciting event and we'd meet family at the arrival gate with exuberant exhilaration (after waving at them like mad people as they disembarked the plane).
Similarly, going somewhere (abroad) brought with it great anxiety and excitement when the plane taxied and prepared to fly bu firing up its engines.
As I have grown older, much has changed. There is no more waving gallery. No more crying uncontrollably and inconsolably when loved ones leave. No following them all the way to the gate to hug them over and over and show them that you will love and miss them. Travel is routine now. Life goes on. And we are all busy adults.
However...
Deep inside, I miss the simple excitement of the airport. I miss the feelings of joy as the plane bore me my special gift (family) or took me to new and exciting adventures.
This trip to the Philippines has reawaken great appreciation for all things home and "the good old days"...
And I
still get excited when the engines rev-up before take-off.
